Benefits of Reformer Pilates

23 Jan Benefits of Reformer Pilates

The Benefits of Reformer Pilates by Amy Holtby.

Reformer pilates is pilates on a reformer machine.

Reformer pilates offers a much bigger range of exercises you can do compared to those practiced in a regular pilates class.

Created by Joseph Pilates, the reformer pilates machine gets you into the right position, with feedback from shoulder pads, hand and foot straps. However, this is pilates with a kick as the straps are attached to springs, which add resistance to every move.

Reformer Pilates is one of the most effective ways to sculpt your body, and whilst some of the exercises might look torturous,  athletes, Olympic champions, tennis greats like Andy Murray, international rugby stars and numerous celebrities like the Kardashians all shout about the benefits, making it at least worth a go.

What are the benefits?

You will have more energy and feel stronger. It’s a bit like having a massage from within, because you take your joints through a whole range of movements, while the resistance works the muscles and ligaments around the joints. It’s something that’s hard to replicate on any other machine. You will improve core strength, get improved body alignment, posture and whole body strengthening.

Ooh, and you can also jump, yes, jump like on a trampoline, but lying down. It’s something that often leaves clients a bit giggly!

It’s also a great distractor. I love Pilates because it makes you think and focus on exactly what you are doing, rather than thinking all those things you need to do at home or work.

Contour by Amy style?

I used to own three pilates and barre studios and have been teaching and practicing pilates for over 20 years. I am passionate about people not just exercising, but moving better and feeling stronger as a result. I like to make my classes challenging, hopefully a little different, and, maybe, you will go away with something new that you have learned about your body.

What should you know before your first class?

  • Anyone can do reformer pilates, at any age. No Pilates background is necessary.
  • Highly recommend is a private class before dipping into group classes, but it’s up to you.
  • All you need is workout clothing, socks, and a comfortable top that you can move in
  • It will take a few classes for you to get used to the technique, but once you are hooked you will understand why so many love it
  • Each class will be challenging, but we will work together to make sure it meets your needs

I offer group, semi-private (2 people) and private classes. I am also a pelvic floor specialist and menopause coach, so I will happily support you with these too. Knowledge is power. Please do feel free to contact me on amy@contourbyamy.co.uk if you want to know more.
