FAQs About Pessary Fitting at Halo Physiotherapy

If you’re considering a pessary to manage pelvic organ prolapse, you may have questions. Below, we answer the most common concerns from our patients at Halo Physiotherapy.

1. Will my pessary fall out?

A well-fitted pessary should stay in place but at times they can fall out. However, if it shifts frequently when coughing, lifting, or during bowel movements, it may need re-sizing or a different type trying. At Halo, we ensure a secure and comfortable fit.

2. Can I have sex with a pessary?

Some pessaries, like ring pessaries, can stay in during intercourse. Others, such as cube pessaries, need to be removed beforehand. We will discuss the best option for your lifestyle.

3. How often do I need a follow-up?

First check-up: 4-6 weeks after fitting.

Regular reviews: Every 3-6 months to prevent complications. Unless self managing, once we are happy you can self manage the pessary independently we discharge you from us and write a letter to your GP to let them know you are self managing it.

Pessary replacement: Every 3-5 years, depending on wear and type of pessary. Silicone ones last much longer than standard PVC ones.

4. Can I remove and clean my pessary myself?

Many women prefer to self-manage their pessary by removing, washing, and reinserting it following a timeline advised by their medical professional. If this is not possible, Halo offers routine check-ups and cleaning assistance.

5. What if my pessary causes discomfort?

Mild pressure is normal, but pain, irritation, or difficulty urinating may indicate an incorrect fit. At Halo, we provide adjustments and explore alternative pessary options if needed.

6. Will I need vaginal oestrogen?

For many women, vaginal oestrogen can improve skin integrity, making the pessary more comfortable. We will advise whether this is necessary and liaise with your GP if required.

7. Can I use a pessary during pregnancy or postpartum?

Yes, but pregnant women should consult their obstetrician first and get them to fit one as there is a slight increased risk of infection when pregnant which can link to pre term birth. Postpartum women often benefit from pessaries for temporary support while tissues heal after the first 6 weeks. At Halo, we assess each case individually.

8. How much does the service cost at Halo?

Initial assessment & pessary order: £300

Follow-up appointments: £60

Pessary replacement (including fitting): £200
